COURSES

This program is designed to encourage people to walk on a regular basis with their neighbours and or friends who live close by.

STRENGTH TRAINING PROGRAM

Clients need to live within BBCHS boundary This program (involving lifting of weights) has a significant role in helping manage Type 2 Diabetes, increasing muscle size, reducing body fat, halting bone loss, improvingbalance and leads to an improved quality of life

Participants need to attend twice weekly for 12 weeks.

NB: A medical assessment is to be completed by Dr, then an individual assessment by physiotherapist is required prior to commencing this program

GENTLE EXERCISES

A gentle and fun chair ongoing exercise program by an activities worker and volunteer for frail people over 70 years to improve overall well being and independence, strength, balance and mobility. A weekly session of 1½ hours consisting of exercise followed by socialisation and intermittent education sessions from health professionals. Referrals are assessed for suitability with a subsequent assessment at 10 weeks to monitor progress of each participant.

TAI CHI FOR LIFE

This program aims to promote good health among older people focussing on; improving balance / mobility, reducing the incidence of falls, and social isolation / loneliness.

MOBILITY FALLS PREVENTION GROUP

This group is a physiotherapy run 2 hour activity program for frail elderly, people at risk of falls, and mobility problems.

A referral to physiotherapy is required from a GP or Allied Health Worker. Limited bus transport is available.

ELSTERNWICK WALKING GROUP

An outdoor walking group wear comfortable clothing, footwear and a hat. Refreshments; provided over chat time.

SOUTHLAND STRIDERS

Become a Southland Strider and walk with an experienced walk leader and volunteers once or twice a week to improve your physical, social and mental health and well being. No traffic, unsteady pavements, hanging branches or poor weather conditions thus limiting falls! This program is a partnership with Southland Shopping Centre, City of Kingston, Bentleigh Bayside Community Health, Central Bayside Division of General Practice, Waves Leisure centre, Southern Health and Central Bayside Community Health Service.
